As two major Dravidian rivals, DMK and the ruling AIADMK, firmed up their poll alliances for the April 6 battle to decide who will govern Tamil Nadu the next five years (2021-26), the Modi Government, ever looking for expansionism, has altered the traditional dynamics of the State's politics.

CONTINUING FARMERS AGITATION IS A REAL THREAT TO THE BJP AT CENTRE

AGGRIEVED COMMUNITY CAN TURN THE TABLES ON THE GOALS OF SAFFRONS
Sushil Kutty - 2021-03-08 11:27
Farmers have marked 100 days of protests and Covid-19 has been in the blood for a year, both the anniversaries falling somewhat in the same week. And neither is in a hurry to say quits. The coronavirus is mutating and so has the farmers agitation against the Modi Government's new farm laws. The farmers have now started blocking an expressway running by Delhi. The hold-ups at the border outposts continue, but the jamming of the expressway covers a wider swathe and the colourful sprawl of the tent across the breadth of the expressway is astonishingly breathtaking. Even the blacktop has transformed into a myriad of shades, red, blue and green with a smattering of yellow in between.

BOILING OIL THREATENS ITS CONTINUED USE AS CASH COW

CENTRE, STATES WILL HAVE TO FOREGO SOME EASY REVENUE
K Raveendran - 2021-03-08 11:24
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has shed copious tears about high fuel prices and claimed the government feeling ‘dharmasankat’ (dilemma) over the issue. But the government’s cause is not that of ‘dharmasankat’, but one of avarice. Dharmasankat is when there are two options, both of which are correct — morally, ethically and in all respects. But in the case of fuel prices, the government has always been opting for wrong, when the choice was between right and wrong.

DIGITAL LABOUR DEMAND AND SUPPLY INCREASING SHARPLY FROM INDIA

PLATFORMS NEED LEGAL AND FINANCIAL PUSH TO GRAB THE OPPORTUNITIES
Gyan Pathak - 2021-03-08 11:19
When the countries of the world greatly suffered from the outbreak of COVID-19, in India, by contrast, both labour demand and supply increased in the digital labour market, from mid-March 2020. There was also a steep increase in the number of registered workers across all occupations, except for professional services globally. Even the general increase in labour supply was unaffected by the seasonal patterns, in contrast to what was observed in the global trends, indicating a steady demand of such work locally and regionally. If India is to grab these new emerging opportunities, the country must avoid implementing the stifling digital laws it has been trying to implement for quite some time, and go for a considerable legal and financial push to the sector.
