A new left wing wind is blowing in many parts of Europe and this has been reflected in the outcome of the national and local levels of elections in Germany, Norway, Belgium and now in Austria. On Sunday, voters of Austria’s second largest city after Vienna, Graz gave an unprecedented mandate to the Communist Party of Austria (KPO) in terms of 29 per cent of votes polled, thereby facilitating the process of election of a communist Mayor of the city.

Punjab Congress continues to spring surprises. Ousted Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh left a week ago and everybody thought that’s the end of it. But no, Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu had to unbuckle that belief and give Capt. Amarinder Singh another opportunity to say “Didn’t I tell you so?” Sidhu is “unstable”, insists the Capt. “I know him from the time he was a child”.

Yawning contradictions between the radicalism of delegates and trade unionists at Britain’s Labour Party s conference and careful hedging from the top table tell us a lot about the state of the Labour Party. The German voters gave a decisive rebuff to the ruling centre right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the national elections on September 26 as the party of the present chancellor Angela Merkel got only 24.1 per cent of the votes as against 25.7 per cent by its rival Social Democratic Party (SPD).The CDU recorded its worst showing in the seventy years of the party’s history despite the high acceptability of Merkel as a popular leader during her sixteen year rule from 2005.

The United Nations terms for recognition are so strict that Taliban are reconciled to their fate of no recognition for long.

Former Jawaharlal University Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar would henceforth be Congress neta not CPI ‘comrade’. Ditto Jignesh Mevani, ‘independent’ MLA from Vadnagar, Gujarat. The two will grace Congress ranks. Rahul Gandhi himself was at the forefront to welcome the two into the grand old party. People consider them both “catch” of the day, month and year. The Congress couldn’t be more pleased.
