Aden

Aden is a port city in Yemen located at the mouth of the Red Sea on a peninsula in the south of Arabia, 105 m. east of Bab-el-Mandeb, in a climate hot, but healthy. It is an important coaling and petroleum refinery centre.

It was once a fortified town with a coaling and military station under British rule. In 1839, it became part of British India, but in 1935 became a Crown Colony. During 1967-90, Aden was capital of South Yemen, formally the People's Republic of South Yemen which, in 1970, was renamed the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. With the unification of northern and southern Yemen in 1990, Aden was no longer a national capital but remained the capital of Aden Governorate which covered an area similar to that of the Aden Colony.
