ALLANTOIS

ALLANTOIS, also called allantoid, is a membrane enveloping the foetus in mammals, birds, and reptiles. It is formed as an outgrowth of the embryo's gut, lying below the chorion in many vertebrates. In eutherian mammals it forms part of the placenta, while in birds and reptiles, it surrounds the embryo.
