Almora

Almora is a district in the State of Uttarakhand in India. The district is located between 29°-30° North latitude and 79°-81 East longitude. It is bounded in the east by the district of Pithoragarh bordering Tibet and it's west lies the district of Garhwal and it's North lies the newly created district of Bageshwer and in the South there is the district Nainital.

Area of the district is 5385.00 Sq Km while population as per census 2001 is 6,30,567.

The district derives its name from its headquarter town of the same name.

There are nine tehsils , 11 community development blocks, 95 nyay panchayats, 1146 gram panchayats, and 2282 villages (102 uninhabited).

History

The mountain on which the Almora is located is described in the famous Hindu epic Manaskhand.

The ancient town of Almora, before it's establishment was under the possession of Katyuri king Baichaldeo.

The town of Almora was founded in 1560 by Kalyan Chand.

The district almora was part of the State of Uttar Pradesh before Uttarakhand was formed on the 9th November 2000.
