Alsatia

Alsatia was the popular name for Whitefriars, a notorious area in London, which at one time enjoyed the privilege of a debtors' sanctuary, and had, till abolished in 1697, become a haunt of all kinds of nefarious characters. It derived its name from the French region of Alsace, known for its independent cities and lawlessness.
