Amazons

Amazons were a fabulous race of female warriors, who had a queen of their own, and excluded all men from their community. To perpetuate the race, they cohabited with men of the neighbouring nations. They slew all the male children they gave birth to, or sent them to their fathers. They burnt off the right breasts of the females, that they might be able to wield the bow in war.

A member of this legendary race of female warriors is called Amazon. Ancient Greeks believed in existence of such a race in Scythia, a region near the Black Sea in modern Russia, or somewhere else on the edge of the world. The word amazon is formed by joining 'a' (without) and 'mazos' (breast) which means 'breastless' in Greek.
