Amba, according to Indian mythology, is one of the names of Durga.

As per a story, she took three different forms, and in one of the form became wife of Shiv.

There was another Amba, according to Mahabharat, who was eldest daughter of king of Kashi.

Amba had two other sisters - Ambika and Ambalika.

Bhishma abducted all the three sisters to make them wives of Vichitravirya.

When it was revealed that Amba was already in love with Shalva, she was set to him. However, Shalva did not accept her on the ground that she stayed in another man's house.

Amba then returned to Bhishma. She wanted Bhishma to marry her, but he rejected the request. She was angered by such an insult. She vowed to avenge herself. She underwent a severe penance at got a boon from Shiv to be able to avenge herself in the next birth.

Amba reborn as a daughter of Drupad in the next birth and her name was Shikhandini. Shikhandini later became Shikhandi and fought in Mahabharat War. This Shikhandi became cause of Bhishma's death.
