Apposition

Apposition is a technical term for the positioning of something in respect of something else, typically close together or side by side.

When it comes to usage of words in Grammar, two or more words or phrases are said to be in apposition when both the expressions are grammatically parallel and referring to same word or phrase. For example, 'Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, was a great scholar. Here 'Jawaharlal Nehru' and 'the first Prime Minister of India' are in apposition because they are grammatically parallel and has the same referent 'was a great scholar'. Here the second expression 'the first Prime Minister of India' is in apposition with the first 'Jawaharlal Nehru', because the second supplement the first, and both has the same syntactical function in the sentence.
