Ba gua

Ba gua, literally eight divinatory symblols, also pa kua, is a Chinese religious motif. The eight trigrams of the I Ching (Book of Changes) are incorporated in this motif. These are typically arranged octagonally around a symbol or around a mirror. The symbol denotes the balance of yin and yang in Daoist philosophy.

The eight trigrams in Daoism are:
Qian (☰): Heaven (Creativity, strength)
Kun (☷): Earth (Receptivity, nurturing)
Zhen (☳): Thunder (Initiation, action)
Xun (☴): Wind/Wood (Growth, flexibility)
Kan (☵): Water (Depth, wisdom)
Li (☲): Fire (Clarity, illumination)
Gen (☶): Mountain (Stillness, stability)
Dui (☱): Lake (Joy, reflection)

In feng shui, it is spelled as one word bagua. It is regarded as a pattern, and it is believed that this pattern determines the significance and auspicious qualities of spatial relationships.

Ba gua is also a name of a Chinese martial art. There is a circle and eight points around it. The movements are focused on the circle and the defense of the points.
