Bahraich
Bahraich is a district in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India. The district is located between 28°24' and 27°4' latitude and 81°65' and 81°3' east of longitude. It is bounded by Bardiya district of Nepal in the northwest, Banke district of Nepal in the northeast, Lakhimpur and Sitapur districts of Uttar Pradesh in the west, Hardoi in the southwest, Gonda in the southeast, and Shravasti in the east.The district derives its name from its headquarter town of the same name.
The district is spread over an area of 4696.8 sq km.
History
History of Bahraich begins from time immemorial. It finds mention in even Indian mythologies.It was famous as the Capital of God Brahma, the maker of universe. It was also known as part of Gandharva Forest. This was a place for meditation for Rishis (saints), and therefore, the place came to be known as "Brahmaich" which later became Bahraich.
According to some historians, this place was the capital of "Bhar" dynasty during middle ages. Therefore it was called as "Bharraich", Which later came to be known as "Bahraich".
Famous Chinese visitors Huen Tsang and Feih Yaan also visted this place. The famous Arab visitor Ibne-ba-tuta visted Bahraich and wrote that Bahraich was a beautiful city situated at the bank of holy river Saryu.
According to Purans (Indian mythology) King Luv, the son of God Ram & King Prasenjit ruled Bahraich. During exile Pandavas along with their mother Kunti visited this place.
The guru of Maharaja Janak , Rishi Ashtvakra used to live here. Rishi Valmiki & Rishi Balark also used to live here.
On February 7, 1856, Resident General Outrem declared the rule of East India Company on Awadh. Bahraich was made the centre of a divison & Mr. Wingfield was appointed as its commissioner.
Bahraich played an important role during First Freedom Struggle of 1857 and after 1920.
