Barium

Barium is an element of the atomic number 56. Its chemical symbol is Ba. It is a soft, white, and reactive metal of the alkaline earth group.

In medicine, the mixture of barium sulfate and water is called barium, which is given to patients to swallow before radiological examination of their stomach or intestines. Since it is opaque to X-rays, it permits such examination.

Barium compounds have many other uses such as in water purification, glass, pigments, paper, textiles and plastic industries. In signal flares and fireworks, these are used for producing a light of bright yellowish-green colour. In high-temperature superconductors, oxide of barium is an important component.
