Benin

Benin is a county in West Africa west of Nigeria. Its former name was Dahomey before it was renamed Benin in 1975. It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the north-west, and Niger to the north-east. Its capital city is Poto Novo. Surface area or this country is 112,622 sq km and Currency is CFA franc. French is its official language. Several West African languages are also spoken. It is a densely populated and fertile country in Western Africa.

It formed part of what was once a powerful kingdom, during 14th-17th centuries. French conquered this country in 1893 and then it became part of French West Africa. It became independent in 1960.

It yields palm-oil, rice, maize, sugar, cotton, and tobacco.
