Bertrand du Guesclin

Bertrand du Guesclin (1314-1380), was a constable of France, born in Côtes du Nord. He was one of the most illustrious of French war-captains, and distinguished as one or the chief instruments in expelling the English from Normandy, Guienne, and Poitou. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Auray in 1364, but ransomed for 100,000 francs, and again by the Black Prince, but soon liberated. He was esteemed for his valour by foe and friend alike, and he was buried at St. Denis in the tomb of the kings of France.
