Birket Foster

Birket Foster (1825-1899), full name Myles Birket Foster, was a celebrated British artist, an illustrator, watercolourist and engraver, born at North Shields. His earliest work was done in wood-engraving under the direction of Landells, and many of his sketches appeared in the Illustrated London News. Following this he executed, in collaboration with John Gilbert, a series of illustrations for the works of Goldsmith, Cowper, Scott, and other poets, in which he exhibited a rare skill in rural scenes. His subsequent work had been in water-colours, and in 1861 he was elected a member of the Water-Colour Society.
