Black Hole of Calcutta

Black Hole of Calcutta is a confined apartment, ie a dungeon in Fort William, Calcutta, now Kolkata, measuring 4.30 × 5.50 ⁠metres (14 × 18 ⁠⁠feet), into which 146 English prisoners were crammed by the orders of the Newab of Bengal, Siraj ud-Daulah on the 19th of June 1756 following the capture of Calcutta. Their sufferings were excruciating, and only 23 survived till morning.
