East Singhbhum

East Singhbhum is a district in Jharkhand state of India. The Head Quarter of this district is Jamshedpur. The district got its name from its past when the whole area was habitat of Lions. Singhbhum literally means the land of lions. This district was formed after isolating nine blocks from greater Singhbhum on 16th of January 1990. The district lies between a Longitudinal Extent 86° 04' - 86° 54' East and Latitudinal Extent : 22°12' - 23°01' Min North. It is bounded in the East by Midnapur District (West Bengal), in the West by West Singhbhum, in the North by Purulia District (West Bengal) and in the South by Mayurbhanj District (Orissa).

Before independence the same area of this district was a part of old Manbhum District and Old Dhalbhum Estate. After independence it was merged with the Greater Singhbhum. This district has two Sub - Divisions namely Dhalbhum and Ghatshila. It has nine blocks - Golmuri cum Jugsalai (Jamshedpur), Potka & Patamda (in Dhalbhum Sub - Division) and Ghatshila, Musabani, Dumaria, Baharagora and Chakulia ( in Ghatshila Sub-Division). There are 150 panchayats and 1770 Revenue Villages out of which 1612 Revenue Villages are inhabited.
