Elections in India

Since India is a democratic country, the people elect their representatives through elections. The Constitution of India says that superintendence, direction and control of elections are vested in the Election Commission of India. Electoral rolls are maintained by the Election Commission of India. Elections to the House of the People and to the Legislative Assemblies of States are called general elections when they are conducted to elect representatives for a new term. By-elections are held to fill up any vacancy during the term.
