Groundwater

Water occurring in the subsurface zone where all spaces are filled with water under pressure greater than that of the atmosphere.

Water found underground as a result of rainfall, ice and snow melt, submerged rivers, lakes, and springs is also called groundwater. This water often carries minerals. These minerals can accumulate in the remains of buried organisms and eventually cause fossilization.
