Pran Krishna Chakraborty

Pran Krishna Chakraborty was a revolutionary freedom fighter of India. He was born on October 1933 at Faridpur, now in Bangladesh. He was son of Jankinath chakraborty. When he was a IIIrd year student of Midford Medical school, Dacca, he gave up studies and engaged in the revolutionary works. He belonged to Anusheelan Samity. He was Arrested in December 1932 at Jalpaiguri with Arms, and subsequently sentenced to a prison term of 7 years. While being transferred from Jalpaiguri jail to Calcutta jail, he escaped from the custody of armed police escort from a running train with uniform of convict with steel handcuffs locked on the wrist. Thereafter, he went underground. A reward was declared by the then British Government for his arrest. He was later arrested again on 29.10.1933 on the bank of a river in the afternoon following the night raid on Hilli railway station in West Bengal. The trial court sentenced him to death, however, the sentence was commuted later by the High court to a prison term of 25 years. Then he was deported to the Andamans jail. There in the Cellular Jail he took part in the second hunger strike in 1937. He fell a victim to the brutal punishment of flogging in the Cellular Jail. He was repatriated in January 1938. In July 1939, he took part in another hunger strike for 36 days in Alipore Central Jail. Ultimately, he was released on 31 August 1946. His total jail period was 14 years.
