Ranavalona III

Ranavalona III (1861-1917) was queen, and last sovereign of the Kingdom of Madagascar. She was crowned in 1883, but her kingdom and capital were taken from her by the French in 1893, and thereafter she remained queen only in name, until 28 February 1897. France had officially annexed Madagascar on 1 January 1896. Nevertheless, military Governor Joseph Gallieni exiled Ranavalona from Madagascar on 27 February 1897, and officially abolished the monarchy the next day. She died in Algeria on 23 May 1917.
