Ranchi

Ranchi is a district in the State of Jharkhand in India. This derives its name from the city of the same name which is also the capital city of the state. It is situated at Latitude 23°23' N Longitude 85°23' E. Area of this district is 7574.17 sqare kilometre. Its height from sea level is about 2140 feet.

Earlier the name of the district was Lohardaga. The old district had come into existence after the creation of the non-regulation South – West frontier as a result of the Kol rising in 1831-32. The name of the district was changed in 1899 from Lohardaga to Ranchi after the name of a small village (which is now called purani Ranchi or old Ranchi).

Administrative Setup in Ranchi is divided into Ranchi, Khunti and Bundu subdivisions and each subdivision is further divided into blocks, panchayats and villages.
