Yamunotri is in Uttarakhand state of India. It is a place of origin of the holy Yamuna river. It is located at a height of 3235 metres above sea level. It is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus and it is one of the four centres of pilgrimage (Dhams) of Uttarakhand. There is also a temple of the Goddess Yamuna just left of the Yamuna river. This great centre of pilgrimage is in the West of Garhwal Himalaya. It may not be out of place to mention here that the real source of water for this Yamunotri is a frozen natural lake and Champasar glacier which lies at a height of 4421 metres on Kalind mountain. Since it is not possible for devotees to go ahead (say more than one kilometres) on account of difficult terrains, the temple of the goddess Yamuna was built at the foothill. Yamuna Devi temple was built by the king of Tehri Garhwal, Maharaja Pratap Shah. According to mythological stories, the hut of the sage Asit Muni was situated at this very place. The doors of the temple are opened for devotees for only about six months, beginning from Akshaya Tritiya (April - May) and ending on Dipawali (October - November) The water of the river Yamuna is cool, however, there are many hot streams around this place. These streams ultimately flows down to Kunds (tiny ponds, lakes or wells). One of the famous hot spring Kund is Suryakund. It is famous for its hot water up to 80
