Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is a state in india. It cmae into being on 9 November, 2000, the 27th State of India and its name was Uttaranchal. Later in January 2007, this name Uttaranchal was officially changed to Uttarakhand, the older name of the area which is even mentioned in various scriptures of Hindu religion. It lies between Longitude 77° 34' 27" East to 81° 02' 22" E and Latitude 28° 53' 24" North to 31° 27' 50" N. It has an area of about 53,484 sq kms.

The population of the state is 8,489,349. Dehradun is the capital of this state. Principal Languages of this state are Hindi, Garhwali, Kumaoni. It is often called the Land of the Gods (Dev Bhoomi), because of its various holy places and abundant shrines. The hilly regions of Uttarakhand offer unspoilt landscapes to the tourists and pilgrims. Kumbh Mela held at Haridwar is a great occasion of pilgrims.

History

The History of Uttarakhand is ancient one. The name Uttarakhand finds mention even in the ancient Hindu scriptures as Kedarkhand, Manaskhand and Himavant. The Kushanas, Kunindas, Kanishka, Samudra Gupta, the Pauravas, Katuris, Palas, the Chandras and Pawaras and the British have ruled it in turns.
