LOOKING BACK AT ELECTION CAMPAIGNS IN INDIA SINCE 1952

Nitya Chakraborty - 2021-03-27 12:27
As the first phase of the polling in Bengal and Assam began on March 27 for the assembly elections, I looked back sitting before the television at the first assembly elections in West Bengal in 1952 in which I actively participated as a campaigner. I was ten years old, a school student. But my leftist family background helped in becoming active workers of CPI soon after our family arriving in Calcutta in 1950 as refugees from East Pakistan. It was a period of intense struggle for our family for survival but for me, Calcutta was the city of hope which will revolutionise the Indian society.

Gyan Pathak - 2021-03-27 12:23
The fresh wave of COVID-19 spreading in India with new ‘variants of concern’ is creating new hurdles to the economy of the country which has just been recovering from the impact of the pandemic in 2020. Almost all the states are reporting sharp rise in infection but the six states – Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh – are most affected. These states are also most important for the economy of the country. The containment measures, curfews, and lockdowns will thus adversely affect the economy of the country.

BENGAL’S MUSIC CULTURE TURNS POP DURING ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS

EVERY POLITICAL PARTY HAS ITS OWN SIGNATURE TUNE FOR ITS CAMPAIGN
Harihar Swarup - 2021-03-27 11:31
A filmi song plays intermittently on the para (locality) loudspeaker, breaking the sleepiness of a Sunday afternoon. A catchy tune, it’s been playing for some days on the trot. A lady with a husky voice sings spiritedly, and the words ‘desh ka bachha bachha’ float in the air. Curious, I look up the refrain with the search words ‘Hindi song’. This peppy number; it then emerges, is a campaign song which declares ‘Bharat ka bachha bachha mere Ram pe kurban hai’ (every child of India dotes on my Ram).
