Covid has impacted the coal industry no less seriously than other energy industries, which saw one of their worst phases as energy demand hit a low. The Indian coal industry was no exception, with Coal India revising down its production target to 650-660 million tonnes for 2020-21. The Maharatna PSU had produced 602 million tonnes of coal last year as against a target of 630 million tonnes.

Health sector has been in focus right from the beginning of the financial year 2020-21, since India was locked down on March 24 last year due to outbreak of coronavirus pandemic. It proved a straw on the camel’s back. Our healthcare facilities were overwhelmed at a time when the government had actually lowered the allocation, which was just about one per cent of the GDP, while it was 1.5 per cent in 2018-19, and the government had promised to raise it to 2.5 per cent by 2025. The pandemic enforced urgent spending, both public and private, financially breaking most of us, and it is in this context people are waiting for the budget 2021-22 in general and the health sector in particular.

The rigidity in attitude and approach of both the NaMo government and the agitating grain growing farmers now on the war path over the moves by the government to introduce a major role to private sector in the retail grain trade complex and silence of other political parties indicate a wide vacuum in political thinking. Farmers are insisting on repeal of new laws relating to grain trade and the government appears to be willing to meet all demands by farmers except their main demand of its surrender.
