At last, he speaks! After more than two years of silently working away on his investigation into Russian campaign interference, and six weeks after his final report showcased the detailed effort to tilt the 2016 election in Donald Trump’s favor, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has once more stated what we’ve already heard: There was a crime committed, his investigation was obstructed, and Congress is the only institution that can pursue the president.

Such a matter of fact reply carried a deeper message that the massive BJP victory in UP was partly due to the Modi wave and that a section of the voters are not free from the doubt that there were irregularities in the polling process centering on EVMs.

The Congress drama of resignations after every poll debacle has become repulsively repetitive. The party needs a new script for the drama to have takers in future.

Most poll analysts and several media viewers including me were off the mark in their analysis of the election 2019 results precisely due to their dependence on traditional understanding of popular responses. They may have been aware of rapid social transformation of Indian mind but did not take its impact in account as most political strategists had ignored it in evolving their electoral strategies. The transformation of even rural society was reflected in their acceptance of norm of small family sending their children to schools. In other words their development concepts had undergone radical change with realization that charity cannot end their poverty nor can it elevate their social existence.

Bahujan Samaj Party boss Mayawati has an interesting theory. She says EVMs were not tampered in the 10 seats the BSP won and in the five the Samajwadi Party emerged victorious in. This, according to her, was deliberately done so that neither the BSP nor the SP would have reason to complain once the BJP took the lion’s share of the seats with EVM-help. So far, nobody’s buying this conspiracy theory. Not even alliance partner Samajwadi Party, which believes Mayawati cut herself a better deal by getting into a gathbandan with the SP.

The BJP leaders are ecstatic at the grand victory of the party in West Bengal. They ought to be, as it was unexpected gift from the Marxists. The BJP did not imagine even in their dreams that the leaders of the CPI( Marxist) would offer them unconditional help to trounce Mamata Banerjee in her bastion.

There are those who say the BJP sold Modi very well. The reality is it was Narendra Modi who sold BJP very, very well. And he sold the BJP to a “New India” made up of an array of people, including first-time voters and sections of Muslims who believed Modi was sincere when he parroted ‘Sabka Saat Sabka Vikas’.
