LOCKING DOWN ECONOMY

Vijay Sanghvi - 2020-05-05 10:43
“Jan hai to Jahan Hai” is a very old saying. It may have origins in the Moghul era or later, however, it does not matter. it was certainly a desperate cry of a fighter on verges of defeat with dread of death and was eager to escape by running away from the battle ground to save own life. Yet another familiar utterance is “The world will remain if own life is saved.” The NaMo government adopted the strategy on similar perception to fight the pandemic corona virus. It imposed clamp of the lockdown on human activities including earning livelihood to sustain life and social contacts with introduction of fear and suspicions even in close relations of five decades. The solution was to assert that economy has to take back seat, and saving human lives was the first task.

ON HIS 203RD BIRTHDAY, KARL MARX IS THE RADICAL THINKER WE NEED
Kalyan Bandyopadhyay - 2020-05-05 10:28
Two centuries later since the birth of Karl Marx, the teachings of the Communist Manifesto are being further underlined by the coming of the coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath. On the great German philosopher’s 203rd birth anniversary, it’s good to recall what Marx said in the Communist Manifesto: "...this formula clearly proves that the bourgeoisie no longer has the right to be the ruler of society, has no right to impose the conditions of its existence on society as the ultimate law. The bourgeoisie is not fit to rule because they Unable to confirm the existence of slaves in slavery, cannot bring them down to a state where the wealth of slaves Instead of eating, the slave has to be fed. In this bourgeois regime, society can no longer live, that is, in other words, its existence is no longer compatible with society ... The fall of the bourgeoisie and the victory of the proletariat are both inevitable. .... "

CORONA CRISIS HAS AGGRAVATED BEIJING-WASHINGTON RIVALRY
Sushil Kutty - 2020-05-05 10:23
A Bengaluru techie’s email password is ‘Trump is King.’ He lays great emphasis on MAGA – Make America Great Again – and says he’ll change the password if Trump loses the 2020 US Presidential sweepstakes. But this time, MAGA is not the issue, China is! Not just for the Republicans but also for the Democrats. Covid-19 and China’s perceived role in the ‘making of coronavirus’ and contribution to its global spread have become election issues in the USA primarily because the American electorate agrees.

Do we need the governors at all or should the post be abolished? Once again there is a focus on the governors and chief ministers with disturbing confrontations between the two constitutional offices.
