CHANGE OF STATE OR CITY NAME HAS BECOME ROUTINE NOW

WEST BENGAL TO BE RENAMED AGAIN
Harihar Swarup - 2016-08-14 03:30
Changing place names is not unknown in human history. In India, more recently, the renaming of places, cities, states and even streets, has been largely projected as an attempt to redress past wrongs. There was thrill in renaming of Harrington street in the then Calcutta as Ho Chi Minh Street. Constantinople was named as Istanbul.

COW SMUGGLING TO BANGLADESH

WEST BENGAL IS THE WEAK LINK
Ashis Biswas - 2016-08-12 10:08
With the cow smuggling to Bangladesh reduced this year to only about 10 per cent of earlier levels, the Centre is largely satisfied. However, there still remains some concern over the ineffective policing in several areas, mostly in West Bengal, where it has not been possible to stop illegal livestock trafficking totally.

US ENTRY IN DEFENCE SECTOR NOT IN NATIONAL INTERESTS

LOCKHEED’S F-16 TECHNOLOGY IS NOW OBSOLETE
Arun Srivastava - 2016-08-12 09:56
India allowing Lockheed, the US military company, to set up shop and start production of F-16 under the prime minister, Narendra Modi’s “make in India” programme would be the first major move to buy a military technology which has turned obsolete in the original country and rejected by its defence establishment. What is worse the Indian government would be infusing huge FDI fund in the project. It is really distressing that government instead of promoting and developing indigenous technologies was investing to sponsor the market forces having capitalist vested interest.

P. Sreekumaran - 2016-08-11 09:43
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The signs are unmistakable and ominous. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is inexorably hurtling towards disintegration in the wake of the exit from it of the Kerala Congress (Mani).

KASHMIR NEEDS A HEALING TOUCH

MEHBOOBA’S HANDS MUST BE STRENGTHENED
Kalyani Shankar - 2016-08-11 09:38
The Parliament has spoken, the Prime Minister has spoken and almost all the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir and in the country have expressed anguish about the ongoing crisis in the state. An all party meeting will discuss the issue on Friday amidst demand that an all party delegation should visit the state where more than 50 people have been killed and about 5000 injured including the security personnel in the past one month. The crisis broke out after the killing of a 22 year old Burhan Wani last month in an encounter. Since then there have been violent protests with leaderless youth coming out demanding justice. Burhan is described as a terrorist by some and an icon by others. The angry youth have flooded the streets, pelting stones at the security forces and police personnel defying the month long curfew. This killing seems to have raised a whole lot of questions and issues.

GST BILL IS THROUGH AT LAST

CENTRE HAS TO ENSURE SMOOTH IMPLEMENTATION
G. Srinivasan - 2016-08-11 07:08
Sound and salutary economic logic for once trumped parochial and myopic posturing by major political parties of the country when they all passed the Constitution (122 Amendment) Bill in both houses of Parliament.

MODI’S DUPLICITY IS APPARENT ON GAU RAKSHAKS ISSUE

CENTRE SHUNNING ITS RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS DALITS
Arun Srivastava - 2016-08-11 02:04
PATNA: Reminiscent of the 'good Taliban' and 'bad Taliban' classification of the Talibani terrorists by the Pakistani rulers, our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi too pigeonholed the cow vigilantes as fake rakshaks and real rakshaks. It has been Modi’s shrewd move to provide a cover to the Gau rakshaks (vigilantes) who were indulging in perpetrating torture and assaulting the dalits. Since Modi cannot outright decry the programme of Gau raksha (protecting cow) as it is the RSS’s main agenda. he was trying to find a scapegoat.

GST PASSAGE GIVES MODI A SHOT IN THE ARM

'ONE NATION, ONE TAX' HAS MANY DOWNSIDES
S. Sethuraman - 2016-08-09 09:43
It is as well that the Modi Government, after a two-year drought, hit a 'glorious moment' early into third year, with Parliament adopting the long-delayed Constitution Amendment Bill to facilitate the introduction of a nation-wide Goods and Services Tax (GST). In theory, it sounds excellent but will it work as envisaged, given the heterogeneous nature of States' demands and the multiplicity of rate structures to be reformed?

IS PRIME MINISTER’S CONCERN FOR DALITS GENUINE?

SANGH PARIVAR HAS ITS SUPPORT FOR COW VIGILANTES
Amulya Ganguli - 2016-08-09 09:38
Inexplicably, Narendra Modi has been rather slow in cracking the whip on the violent Sangh Parivar rogues. It took him all of 10 days before he uttered a word on Mohammed Akhlaq’s murder by a saffron mob on the suspicion of eating beef.
