WILL SHARIF'S BALOCH EXPERIMENT SUCCEED?

LARGEST PROVINCE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO PAKISTAN
Sankar Ray - 2013-06-21 15:08
The third time prime minister of Pakistan Mian Mohammed Nawaz Sharif takes on the yearning with a grit for a new Pakistan, which is very different from the dazzling-but-vacuous concept of ‘Naya Pakistan’ of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf chief Imran Khan. The very choice of National Party leader, Abdul Malik Baloch as the chief minister of Baluchistan - a much-respected leader, for whom over 120 NGOs appealed to the new PM for leading the troubled Pakhtun province - deserves praise.

MNCs MISLEADING ON THEIR CSR PROGRAMMES

NTPC, SAIL DOING FAR BETTER JOB
Nantoo Banerjee - 2013-06-21 14:44
It seems cheating is endemic to modern advertising and marketing, especially when it comes to multinational corporations operating in host countries with weak regulatory frameworks. They would go to any extent to mislead consumers, the public and the government with atrocious claims. The latest example of one such claim is a spate of TV ads by increasing number of India outfits of some of the giant multinational FMCG companies rather shamelessly asking consumers to buy brands – from soaps and detergents to health food and baby care products - to support their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes. Aren’t such CSR-linked consumer ads unethical and misleading, if not totally illegal?

The US Federal Reserve will continue for the present its purchase of US securities (QE) at the rate of 85 billion dollars a month to support stronger economic recovery and ensure that inflation edges up to its longer-run target of 2 per cent but it may begin a gradual scaling down of this stimulus (quantitative easing) later in the year, depending on incoming data on economy and labour market as well as the level of inflation.

NOTHING ‘NATIONAL’ ABOUT THIS MEDICAL ENTRANCE TEST

‘NEET’ REEKS OF CENTRIST BIAS, DISCRIMINATES ON STATES
Garga Chatterjee - 2013-06-19 11:14
The medical entrance scene in India has changed with the introduction of the undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Meant to be a single window test, the NEET has, in one go, replaced most of the state medical entrance tests. By qualifying in the NEET, students would be able to compete for a percentage of seats in most medical colleges, throughout the Indian union, by their ‘national’ rank. Their ‘state rank’ would help them compete for medical college seats within the states where they fulfill domicile requirements.

TAX THE RICH, FEED THE POOR

OUR PRIORITIES ARE SKEWED AT THE BASE
Adil Hossain - 2013-06-19 11:10
Something unusual is happening in UK as the G8 summit being held in Northern Ireland convenes. Many people are looking up to a Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, someone who is an ideological believer in low taxes, to become a credible champion of a possible crack down on corporate tax avoidance. Cameron desires this G8 to focus on three Ts- tax, transparency and trade- as means to fight poverty and global injustice.
