PERILS AND PITFALLS OF VOLATILE CAPITAL FLOWS
G Srinivasan - 2013-08-16 11:10
The Union Finance Ministry’s belated clarification on August 3 for a sensational banner piece in the otherwise staid but venerable The Hindu that ‘India has to repay $172 billion debt by March 2014’ recalls the classic case of Rip Van Winkle who remained mired in his own reverie for decades and suddenly woke up to find the ground reality!

PAK ISI INSTIGATING BORDER TENSIONS

BID TO WORSEN BILATERAL TRADE TIES
Nantoo Banerjee - 2013-08-16 11:06
ISI, Pakistan’s internationally networked external intelligence cum espionage agency, may not be working alone to engineer a full-scale escalation of cross-border tension and attack on Indian posts. Events in the last two weeks suggest that there may be a deeper economic conspiracy behind the latest round of diplomatic spat between the two frequently belligerent-looking nuclear-armed neighbours as the immediate victim of the army actions and political reactions from both the sides is Pakistan’s decision to stop the proposed ‘most favoured nation’ (MFN) status to India.

FOOD FOR NATION’S THOUGHT
Kalyani Shankar - 2013-08-14 17:23
The populist Food Security bill is all set to go through in Parliament despite the stalling tactics adopted by the BJP led opposition. The political stakes are very high for the Congress as well as its rivals. Even though it does not want to allow the Congress to walk away with the credit for the bill the opposition will not make any serious bid to stall it further as no political party wants to be seen as obstructing a pro – bill, particularly in an election hear.

FOR AN INDIA OF MANY STATES

SAYING YES TO TELANGANA
Praful Bidwai - 2013-08-13 16:51
There cannot be a clearer example of doing the right thing for the wrong reasons than the decision of the United Progressive Alliance, in particular the Congress, to carve a new state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh 10 months before the Lok Sabha elections.
