PUNJAB MIRED IN POLITICS OF DEFECTION

MOGA BY-POLLS COULD BE A TURNING POINT
B.K. Chum - 2013-02-19 08:31
The Deputy Chief Minister and the Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh had been demonstrating his election management skills by winning the elections. Facing the tough task in Moga, he has resorted to engineering defections in the opposition parties, mainly the Congress and the Manpreet Singh Badal-led People’s Party of Punjab. His penchant for “weakening the opposition through defections” reminds one the pioneering role Haryana played in injecting politics of defection in India’s body politic soon after its birth in 1966.

GURU’S HANGING RAISES UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTIONS

FRESH MOVE NEEDED TO PREVENT ALIENATION
Zafar Choudhary - 2013-02-19 08:27
In 1947-48 Kashmir was the only issue between India and Pakistan. The Simla Agreement of 1972 neutralised that centrality to a large extent. Half century after making of the conflict the composite dialogue process, first ever structural engagement between two countries, reduced the importance of Kashmir to one of the eight issues India and Pakistan need to resolve. Transforming Kashmir from ‘the issue’ to ‘one of the issues’ is a rich reflection of India’s diplomatic craftsmanship. However, Pakistan continued to harp on Kashmir as the core issue.

Tairah Firdous - 2013-02-16 18:08
As I kept blinking on my Facebook page for the updates from Kashmir, there was this helplessness that reminded me of the reign of oppression that people in Kashmir continue to suffer till date. Kashmir, the most militarised zone in the world, is again under siege and curfew. This time because India woke up to a new morning by hanging Afzal Guru to death. Guru, a fruit seller, was convicted eight years ago for his role in the attack on Indian Parliament in 2001, the charges Guru always denied.

THE NOOSE AND THE NATION

NO TIME TO ABOLISH DEATH PENALTY
Harihar Swarup - 2013-02-16 18:01
Should death penalty be abolished in India? Perhaps, not; time has not yet come to put a moratorium on capital punishment. Whatever view the Human Right activists may hold, the ultimate punishment acts as a deterrent to potential criminals. Look at three monstrous crimes that have taken place in India in recent years, forcing the government to have a rethink on banning of death penalty. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had only recently spoken of having second thoughts on the death penalty, days after 26/11 convict Ajmal Kasab’s top-secret execution on November 21.
