Moderate and Uneven Recovery Taking Shape Across Europe

A moderate and uneven recovery is taking shape across Europe, supported by the rebound in global trade and policy stimulus, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says in its latest Regional Economic Outlook for Europe. Growth in the region is expected to pick up during 2010-11, but the traditional drivers of recovery are likely to be weaker than usual.

Three weeks after a scrap dealer from Mayapuri in Delhi was hospitalised with acute radiation sickness caused by exposure to cobalt-60, the authorities finally traced the source of the radioisotope to a laboratory in the chemistry department of Delhi University. Meanwhile, one of the 11 people who were seriously exposed to the source died. And the condition of another two is reportedly grave, with platelet counts way below normal and falling. Doctors can do little to help the victims except give them repeated transfusions.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Women & Child Development and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare have jointly prepared a paper for addressing nutritional challenges. The problem of malnutrition in India despite the impressive economic growth, cannot be over emphasized. The paper recommends that malnutrition is not just a child specific problem but is prevalent in every age group. It impacts the ability to fight off infections and leads to increase in morbidity and mortality and also impacts the quality of life.

India and Finland Sign MoC on Road Transport

New Delhi: India and Finland have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in the field of Road Transport. The Memorandum was signed by Shri Kamal Nath, Minister for Road Transport and Highways at Helsinki on Monday during his visit to Finland. Ms Anu Vehviläinen, Minister of Transport, Finland signed the Memorandum of Cooperation from the Finnish side.

2nd Review of India-Singapore CECA launched, Target to Double Trade by 2015

New Delhi: Shri Anand Sharma, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Trade and Industry, Singapore, launched the 2nd Review of the India-Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), here today. The Ministers agreed on a 'bilateral economic roadmap' to take the CECA forward in the coming 5 years. India - Singapore CECA came into existence in August 2005 and has been reviewed once in 2007.

IMF Approves US$171.5 Million Disbursement to Angola

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the first review of Angola's performance under an economic program supported by the Stand-by Arrangement (SBA). The approval enables the disbursement of SDR 114.52 million (about US$171.5 million), bringing total disbursements under the arrangement to SDR 343.56 million (US$514.5 million)

MANILA, Philippines - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has made a positive impact on the lives of the poor in the Asia and Pacific region, and is considered a trusted development partner by its member countries, says a new independent perceptions survey commissioned by the organization. However, Respondents also cited some weaknesses which ADB will need to improve on, including perceptions that it is bureaucratic and lacks speed in decision making, and project execution and monitoring. Promotion of gender equality and governance were also identified as areas where ADB will have to do more work.
