National Environment Tribunal could not become functional

New Delhi: The Ministry had earlier proposed to establish a National Environment Tribunal under the National Environment Tribunal, Act 1995. The Act provided for strict liability for damages arising out of any accident while handling any hazardous substance and for providing relief and compensation for damages to persons, property and the environment resulting from such accidents. However, the National Environment Tribunal could not become functional.

Boards of 25 CPSEs do not have Requisite Number of Independent Directors

New Delhi: As per the Clause 49 of the Equity Listing Agreement, all the listed entities including listed Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) are required to appoint requisite number of Independent Directors on their Boards. Where the Chairman of the Board is a non-executive director, at least one-third of the Board should comprise of Independent Directors and in case he is an executive director, at least half of the Board should comprise of Independent Directors.

3 National Institutes to assess black money in India

New Delhi: The Government has decided to get a fresh study conducted on unaccounted income/ wealth both inside and outside the country brining out the nature of activities engendering money laundering and its ramifications on national security. The proposal was approved by the Government in January, 2011.

Cultivation of Millets declined

New Delhi: The total area coverage under coarse cereals (millets) in the country has declined from 290.25 lakh hectares during 2004-05 to 270.68 lakh hectares during 2010-11 (2nd Advance Estimates). The decline in the area under coarse cereals has been on account of shift of area to more profitable crops such as wheat, rice, cotton etc.

Government to Launch Vegetable Initiative to Meet Vegetable Demand

New Delhi: Government is planning to launch a Vegetable Initiative to meet the demand of vegetables in all State capitals and urban centres with population greater than 10 lakh. Under this initiative, States will be assisted in addressing the entire value chain, right from the stage of pre-production to the consumers table through appropriate measures. State Governments have also been advised to leverage the components of existing schemes under Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States (HMNEH) and National Horticulture Mission (NHM) to ensure steady supply of quality vegetables to urban areas.

Suriname: Growth to pick up further in 2011

Economic growth of Suriname is estimated to have risen from 3 percent in 2009 to 4.5 percent in 2010, driven by a rebound in prices of Suriname’s main commodity exports (gold, petroleum, and alumina), higher alumina production, and elevated government spending. The mission expects growth to pick up further in 2011, to about 5 percent, supported by continued buoyant commodity prices, and large capital investments in the mineral and energy sectors.
