CHINA STILL NOT RECONCILED TO INDIA'S UN BID

WEN VISIT ASSUMES SIGNIFICANCE
Nitya Chakraborty - 2010-11-16 10:09
NEW DELHI: The joint communique issued after the trilateral one day meeting of the foreign ministers of India, China and Russia at Wuhan (China) on November 15 underlines once again that there are lot of hurdles for India to cross before the membership of the United Nations Security Council as a permanent member becomes a reality. The deliberations at the Wuhan meeting has made it clear that there has been no softening of the Chinese stance on the SC membership issue even after the categorical statement of the US President Barack Obama during his recent visit to India. China wants reforms in UN and it will decide after assessing India's performance as a temporary member for two years.

CONGRESS MUST REWORK COALITION DHARMA

NO COMPROMISE WITH CORRUPTION
Amulya Ganguli - 2010-11-16 10:06
Winston Churchill is credited with the remark that America can be expected to do the right thing - but only after it has tried all the other options. The same thing can be said about Andimuthu Raja's resignation from the telecom ministry. The prime minister should have sacked him long ago. But by waiting till the inevitable could not be postponed any further, he lent substance to the belief that he is not firm and decisive enough - in fact, too mild to hold the position that he does. The inordinate delay has also buttressed charges of the government's corruption, which was confirmed when Ratan Tata alleged that a minister had asked for a bribe of Rs 15 crore in the 1990s to let him enter the aviation sector.

SUKHBIR'S CORONATION NOT YET FINAL

FACTIONALISM IN AKALI DAL MAY DELAY THE PROCESS
B.K. Chum - 2010-11-15 17:09
Malevolent stars are ominously eyeing the Akali Dal. Two developments indicate this. First, instead of being arrested, the dominant ruling party's downhill slide both in organizational and governance fields is getting steeper. Second, the Congress has been rejuvenated with the former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh's taking over as the state party chief on November 12. The two developments coupled with the intermittent clashes of interests between the Akali Dal and the BJP are a warning signal for the Punjab's nearly four-year old Akali-BJP government which will have to face elections in 15 months.

OBAMA, BACK FROM ASIA, HAS A TOUGH AGENDA WITH REPUBLICANS

VISIT YIELDS FEWER GAINS BEYOND SOLIDIFYING U S PRESENCE IN ASIA
S. Sethuraman - 2010-11-15 17:04
President Barack Obama returned home on November 14 from a ten-day swing across Asia with limited gains for his economic mission of creating jobs at home through exports to the region's fast-growing markets. But he could not get the G-20 Summit in Seoul move quickly to lay down standards for trade and exchange rate policies for rebalancing global growth. That would have been a step toward easing US-China trade tensions However, undaunted by political setbacks at home, President Obama can be said to have solidified America's continuing presence in the most dynamic region of Asia, integral to its own further advance in the 21st century.

He came, saw, listened, performed and conquered the Indian heart with an electrifying speech at Parliament. The speech had all the elements of a theatrical climax after two days of lackluster proceedings and speculations. He said what India wanted to listen. Initially, there was no euphoria about the visit of this American president.
