In the poster released by the Indian Council of Historical Research on the 75th anniversary of our independence, among the eight leading freedom fighters, country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru has not been placed. A visionary, he was against the division of the country and opposed the proposition to accept religion as the basis. He was declared by Gandhi ji as his political heir and was in jail for nine years. It was during his tenure as the Congress president when the Congress adopted the resolution of complete independence in 1929. While fighting against British, he was also formulating the concept of the democratic structure the country was to have after freedom.

Indians remain one of the most neglected and vulnerable population. The World Social Protection Report 2020-22 reveals that 47 per cent of the global populations are covered by at least one social protection benefit, but in India only 24.4 per cent people are lucky enough to have under a social protection umbrella.

India, which missed the bus twice in the past to pursue export-led growth in an era of globalization, is now in the midst of yet another opportunity to utilize trade as an engine of growth. The opportunity has come India’s way in the face of Sino-US trade stand-off and Covid pandemic that has forced many advance economies to explore a new global manufacturing hubs other than China. India fits into the bill but is India ready to cash-in on the opportunity. Does it have the necessary wherewithal to leapfrog and push the sagging growth? Only time will tell if India has succeeded.
