Circulation of all variants of coronavirus is declining, but it should not make the people and the public health authorities to put off their guards against the COVID-19. Government still needs to prepare the healthcare system ready to face any future threats, and people to be kept at the heart of the post-pandemic recovery.

The recent urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu held for the first time after 2011 has helped strong ruling DMK in the state to consolidated further decimating its rival opposition AIADMK. DMK won all the 21 corporations and unseated AIADMK in its traditional stronghold in western Tamil Nadu. The National electronic channels while interpreting the results however wrongly claimed that the BJP had finished third but in reality the saffron party had finished poor fourth. This is because it counted out Congress which had contested in alliance with ruling DMK.

Whole world has suffered due to humanitarian crisis due to COVID-19 pandemic. The threat is not yet completely over as we are still not certain about the new variants of the rapidly mutating virus. Even though vaccination has given some respite, but glaring inequity in vaccination of the population in different countries hampers the fight against the COVID-19. We need immense resources to meet the challenge not only for the pandemic but also for other diseases, both communicable and non-communicable which have been largely ignored during this period. Patients with diseases like Tuberculosis, Dengue, Malaria, Diarrhea, Diabetes, Cancer, Chronic Kidney problems suffered due to changed priorities. The effect has been seen more in the developing countries who are already short of resources.

The Supreme Court bench led by the Chief Justice N V Ramana will be considering on February 25 the interim report submitted to the apex body by the technical committee set up by the CJI through his order given on October 27 last year to go into the allegations of surveillance using Pegasus software, supposedly by the government agencies. The 12 petitions filed on this issue will come up for hearing also.
