Action painting

Action painting is a style and technique of abstract painting. It is known for its contribution towards the general movement of abstract expressionism. It is sometimes called "gestural abstraction".

In this style of painting, paints are randomly smeared or thrown on a canvas. The ways and means for this act of randomly smearing, throwing, splashing or pouring paints may differ, but the painting must be product of abstract expressionism.

This kind of painting was made popular by the painter Jackson Pollock. The style was popular between 1940s and 1960s.
