Agastya was a saint as per Hindu mythologies. He was begotten of god Varun through a pitcher. He is said to have composed several Vedic hymns.
Another great sage, Vashishth, was also born of the same pitcher.
According to another version of Indian mythological stories, he is said to have been the son of both Mitra and Varun by Urvashi, a celestial damsel.
The story relates that both of them once saw Urvashi at a sacrificial ceremony. Enamoured of her beauty, their semen flowed out and some of it fell into a jar and some in the water. From that jar, Agastya and Vashishth was born.
Agastya had two sons by his wife Lopamudra.
Once the Vindhya mountain was rising too high to obstruct the path of the sun. He made the mountain prostrate before him for good. He went from the north of India to south taking a promise from the mountain that it would remain prostrate until he come back, but he never came back, and therefore, the mountain remains low since then.
Once the ocean offended him which enraged the saint. He then drank the ocean.
He also helped Indra and the other gods in their war against the ((Kalkey), the demons who were hidden under the water of ocean.
While he was living in Dandakaranya, the demon Sund once attacked him. The sage, out of anger, cursed him to die. After death of Sund, Tataka and her son Marich came to him and attacked in a rage. The sage turned both of them into demon.
Agastya was so great a saint that Ram, Lakshman and Sita visited his abode when they were in exile from Ayodhya into the forest. He gave celestial weapons to Ram.
When Ram was crowned king of Ayodhya after completion of his exile, the sage went along with his disciples to congratulate and bless him. He told Ram the history of demons, Hanuman, Vashishth and many other things.
