Avens

Avens is a plant of the rose family cultivated in gardens as ornamental. Its flowers are attractive in colour, leaves are serrated and divided, and have seeds bearing small hooks. It belongs to the genus Geum, and family Roasceae. Water avens (Geum rivale) is cultivated for its drooping pinkish flowers. The mat-forming alpine avens (Geum montanum) is also popular. The Bennet (Geum urbanum) has astringent root which was once used in medicine.
