East Godavari

East Godavari is a District located in the North Coastal part of the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is located between Northern latitudes of 16° 30' and 18° 20' and between the Eastern longitudes of 81° 30' and 82° 30'. The District is a residuary portion of the old Godavari District after West Godavari District was separated in 1925. It is bounded on the North by Visakhapatnam District and the State of Orissa, on the East and the South by the Bay of Bengal and on the West by Khammam and West Godavari Districts. The District is known as rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh with lush paddy fields and coconut groves.

The District is closely associated with the river Godavari, occupying a major portion of the delta area. It derives its name from the river. The Headquarters of the District is located at Kakinada, which is is famous for a sweet called Kotaiah's KAJA.

Area of this district is 10,807 sq kms with 7 Revenue divisions, 64 Revenue mandals and 1012 Grama panchayats. As per census of 2011 the population of the district was 5151549. In 2001 the population was 48,72,622.
