Guntur

Guntur is a district in the State of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is located along the east coast of Bay of Bengal at 16.20°N 80.27°E. Guntur city is its headquarters. It has a coastline of around 100 kilometers. The district is spread over an area of 11,391 sq km and is bounded on the southeast by the Bay of Bengal, on the south by Prakasam District, on the west by Mahbubnagar District, and on the northwest by Nalgonda District. The Krishna River forms the northeastern and eastern boundary of the district, separating Guntur District from Krishna District. Population of the district is 4,889,230 as per census 2011.

It has an average elevation of 33 metres (108 ft) and situated on the plains. There are a few hills in the surrounding suburban areas. It is divided into 57 mandals and four Revenue divisions.

Guntur is an ancient city which was called Garthapuri.

The annual minimum and maximum temperatures are 15°C and 47°C respectively. Stroms and depression, originating in the Bay of Bengal, cross the east coast of the district causing wide spread heavy rain and strong winds.
