BHOPAL: Mr. Justice P. B. Sawant who passed away in Pune few days ago, was a unique judge, totally committed to the values enshrined in the Constitution. His judgments helped consolidate the foundations of the Constitution. As a two-term Chairman of the Press Council of India he gave several verdicts which helped healthy media to have its way in fighting the onslaught by the government and anti-social and terrorist elements. He also did not spare the communal press.

The farmers’ struggle represents a major step towards undoing the dominance of the corporate-Hindutva alliance that has characterised India in the last few years. The peasants, other petty producers like craftsmen, artisans and fishermen, have been among the worst victims of neoliberalism, which has progressively removed all fetters against the spontaneous tendency of big capital to encroach upon their domains. While the attack against the workers under neoliberalism is well-known, its systemic assault on the petty production sector is less appreciated.

The despair on the job front has slowly been replaced by hope. The year 2021 has well begun. A significant fall in unemployment rate has been recorded in January, while employment rate rose though not so impressive. The gains can be consolidated, but would require a great push to the labour intensive business and industries, particularly the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Additionally, the course of fast deteriorating quality of job especially after the pandemic needs to be reversed, which can be done only by putting on hold the four labour codes that the Modi government has got passed in the parliament and subsequently notified.
