Special Correspondent - 2010-03-18 09:50
Economic activity in Chad remained sluggish in 2009, but inflation increased further, owing to food prices. The bad harvest could imply food shortage for up to 2 million people (18 percent of the population). The need for additional food is estimated at between 80,000 to 100,000 metric tons, for which the government has requested external assistance.

Amulya Ganguli - 2010-03-17 08:27

In addition, any satisfaction it felt over the passage of the women's reservation bill in the Rajya Sabha must have been dissipated by the subsequent developments, which showed that the objections of the Mandal group to the proposed law can no longer be ignored. Hence, Pranab Mukherjee's acceptance of the earlier plea of the Yadav troika - Lalu Prasad, Mulayam Singh and Sharad - for an all-party meeting on the subject.
