Trieste

Trieste is an ancient seaport city in Italy. It became part of the Roman Republic in 177 BC. As Triest it belonged to the Habsburg monarchy from 1382 until 1918, and developed as the first seaport of Austro-Hungary Empire. It became an imperial free city in 1849. Italy annexed the city after the end of the World War I. After the Italian armistice in September 1943, the city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops. Trieste became nominally part of the newly constituted Italian Social Republic, but it was de facto ruled by Germany. In 1945, the city came under control of Yugoslav forces, and then under a joint British-U.S. military administration during 1945-47. In 1947, Trieste was declared an independent city state, which was dissolved in 1954, and its parts are joined Italy and Yugoslavia.

The city is situated at the head of the North-East arm of the Adriatic, 214 miles South-West of Vienna. It consists of an old and a new town on the level fronting the sea. It has a fine harbour and extensive manufactures, embracing shipbuilding, rope-making, &c.
