Alexander III

Alexander III was Pope from 1159 to 1181, successor to Adrian IV, an able man, whose election Barbarossa at first opposed, but finally assented to. He took the part of Thomas à Becket against king Henry II of England. Nevertheless, Tomas à Becket was murdered in 1170, for which Alexander humbled King Henry II. Later he canonised Thomas à Becket, as also St. Bernard.
