President Donald J. Trump’s legacy as a corrupt and lawless president is now permanently recorded for all of history. By a near party-line vote, he stands formally indicted of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, making him only the third president in the history of the United States to be impeached. Attention now shifts toward his January Senate trial, but the ultimate verdict on his criminal rule will come on Nov. 3, 2020.

The continuing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) throughout the country covering people of all religions, have now assumed a global dimension with the participation of large number of academics, students as also other public intellectuals in the programmes condemning the passing of such a discriminatory Bill by the Indian Parliament. India represented the home of secularism and religious tolerance by the global community and now all on a sudden they are finding that communalism and bigotry are being practised by the ruling BJP regime and the great Indian nation is being turned into Hindurashtra as per the programme of the New India by 2022.

The inevitable struggle has begun, may be earlier than expected. The struggle is between two ideas, rather ideologies, ideology of secular state and ideology of theocratic state. One is represented by the Constitution, with its great legacy of freedom struggle and the values of unity in diversity. The other is concept of a nationhood based on the parameters of religion which they call the Hindu Rashtra. Those ideological battles attained a new form and vigor with the ascendance of Narendra Modi for a second tenure, its early roots could be traced in the crucial period of India’s freedom struggle.

Japanese are known for ethnocentric mindset. This gives an opportunity for a quick collective decision, even in a strong democratic pattern of society. The sudden about-turn of Japan for not joining RCEP without India is a case in point. It puzzled the whole world and put Indian negotiators in confusion. The observers were agog as what made Japan dragging its feet . Even in the last round of negotiation in Vietnam, not a slightest indication was made by Japan when India was dilly-dallying in joining the block.

The ruling regime is adamant in implementing their agenda and so all indications are that this turmoil on the issue of CAA will going to continue.
