Africa

Africa is the land of Afri, an ancient people of North Africa. This landmass is one of the five great divisions of the globe forming the second largest continent, three times larger than Europe. It has an area of 30.1 million sq km or 11.62 million sq mile. Seven-tenths of it is within the torrid zone. It is a southward projection of the old world landmass surrounded by sea except where the Isthmus of Suez joins it to Asia. The continent is divided roughly in half by the equator.

Total population of the continent was over 1.1 billion in 2013. The continent is more or less inhabited by dark-skinned races.

It was long a terra incognita, but in the 19th and 20th century, it was explored in all directions, and attempts were everywhere made to bring it within the circuit of civilisation. It was being parcelled out by European nations, chiefly Britain, France, and Germany, and with more zeal and appliance of resource by Britain than any other.

Africa is divided into five sub-regions - Eastern Africa, Western Africa, Northern Africa, Middle Africa, and Southern Africa.
