Nainital
Nainital is a district in the State of Uttarakhand in India. It is famous as one of the '64 Shakti Peeths'. It derived its name from a mythological story of Lord Shiv and Sati (Parvati). It is believed that the left eye of Mother Sati dropped here. Naini lake is Eye shaped, and thus this place came to be known as Nainital. Nainital became a Janpad or district in October 1891. During British rule it was known as Chharwata pargana, which derived its name from 60 lakes in the area.According to 2001 Census, it has a population of 762,912 which consists of 400,336 male and 362,576 female. Population density of this district is 223 per sq kms.
This hilly district of Kumaun division lies between 20°23' North latitude and 79°27' East longitude. It has an area of 3422 sq kms. It is bounded by Almora in the North, Champawat in the East, Udham Singh Nagar in the South and Pauri and borders of Uttar Pradesh in the East. Nainital has 8 development blocks, 44 Nyay Panchayats, 450 Gram Sabhas, 1062 inhabited and 26 uninhabited villages, 33 forest villages, 4 municipalities, 3 town panchayats, and one cantonment area. Koshi is the main river of the district.
